Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Michael Scialabba.

Dr. Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Both my parents worked in the medical profession and I grew up knowing I wanted to follow them into medicine, however I didn’t know what field I was most interested in until I experienced the significance of Dentistry and Oral Health. While in college I worked in the Emergency Room getting as much experience as I could but it was through a volunteering effort while a student at Boston College that I realized Dentistry was for me. I saw firsthand how children at the Campus School (a school for children with disabilities) benefited from a concerted effort to improve their oral health. From that experience I knew I had to become a dentist. I graduated from SUNY at Stony Brook with a DDS in Dentistry in 2003. Prior to that I received a BS in Finance at Boston College. This business foundation has helped me to understand the management aspect of owning a dental practice. I completed my residency at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach Florida. Helping provide care for our veterans was very meaningful for me, especially being in NY during and after the attack on 9/11. Our veterans, many medically compromised, needed multi-specialty care and I continued to see firsthand the direct connection between oral health and overall health. I moved back to the Boston area and eventually became Chief of Dental at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Peabody, MA. When the opportunity arose to spin out the dental practices I realized my dream of owning a multi-specialty dental group practice. The lessons I learned at the start of my career working with medically compromised individuals stayed with me professionally and today my practices, Great Hill Dental Partners, are known for providing whole health dentistry. As CEO of Great Hill Dental, I manage a team of over 120 doctors, hygienists, assistants and front desk staff. I continue to make time to treat patients every week. Patients always come first at Great Hill Dental.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Taking risks is what it takes to realize your professional dreams. When I was faced with the opportunity to spin off and build out 5 new practices at one time, I knew it would be a challenge, from enhancing the culture to focusing on the whole patient experience and finding partners who had common goals and shared my vision. As I focused on improving patients’ lives I realized quickly that patients needed to be educated on the link between oral health and systemic health. The public health services in this country don’t do enough to educate the population about this link and I embraced the challenge at Great Hill Dental. Patient education is a part of our core mission.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Great Hill Dental Partners – what should we know?
At Great Hill Dental Partners, our goal is to provide our patients with the experience and quality of care we would want for our own families. Our focus is whole health dentistry and we provide quality preventive care to help our patients avoid unnecessary pain and costly treatments in the future. Modern dentistry has confirmed the direct connection between oral health and overall health. In particular, gum disease is now medically proven to be associated with a wide variety of diseases like stroke, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, and around 74% of the US adult population has some form of gum disease. Our offices are multi-specialty so our patients receive comprehensive care as well as continuity of care to help them achieve optimal health. I am most proud of the relationships we have built with patients. In the Boston area, patients have lots of choices for dental care and we are proud they choose us for their families. Recently we partnered with Gentle Dental Partners, another local group dental practice. This partnership provides us with more resources to grow and develop our brand, something I am very excited about for the future.
